I think it was my grandma who taught me to work.
It's never been a hard thing for me to want to be apart of accomplishing something. There have definitely been projects that I haven't enjoyed or wanted to be apart of. I remember a learning experience involving work. I was working at the square ice cream store and it was summer. I was in high school. And the family was going boating that day. I had to work but really wanted to go to the lake instead. I called work and told them I couldn't go to work. I think that I said I was sick. Anyway I started getting ready to go to the lake and grandma asked me where I was going. Long story short I made the right choice and called work back and told them I would be in. It was an embarrassing thing so I've never done it since.
I'd want my kids to know that everyone works. If you want to be successful and independent you have to do things you may not want to do sometimes. There are always going to be things about a job that you don't like but then you have to weigh out your options and decide what you can live with and what you can live without. Working in HR I saw work from a different angle and saw how important it is to have people show up on time to do their job. Each person is valuable to the company and without them success suffers. So I would teach my children that it's important to remember that there are other people relying on them. There is satisfaction and reward when one has a job to do and completes it. I always feel much better if I can get the job done. Ben taught me lesson one day while I was mowing grams' back lawn. I was getting it done quick to go do something else and he said "You may as well do it right the first time otherwise you'll just have to do it again". I think of that often.
You can't live and take care of yourself unless you're earning your way. There is always a job to be done whether you're getting paid money or getting paid with food/shelter. So pitch in and get to work.
Grams bible quote "By the sweat of thy brow shalt thou earn thy bread".
Or something to that effect. ;)
